Quantitative Computed Tomography

Today, Osteoporosis clinical trials often demand more than just DXA-based measurements of BMD. With QCT and MRI you have access to independent measurements of trabecular and cortical BMD as well as bone structure and derived measures of bone strength. QCT and MRI produce tomographic images of the bone which provide three dimensional images of bone geometry which can be used to measure cortical bone dimensions.

Unlike DXA scanners, CT scanners are not dedicated to bone mineral measurements. Therefore greater care is needed in training the CT technologists and proactively monitoring image quality in order to ensure that useful data are produced. Synarc’s physicists have developed complete image acquisition protocols for all types of CT scanners and our technologists and radiologists review each scan to ensure that it meets our high quality standards.

Synarc is able to provide QCT image analysis using commercial third party software like QCTpro from Mindways Software, Inc. (Austin, TX) as well as more sophisticated proprietary software that delivers parameters on the cutting edge of QCT research. So whether your goals are early phase decision making, data for product registration or post-approval marketing studies, Synarc can provide unmatched QCT services to meet your needs.

Synarc’s Quantitative CT services include:

  • Central QCT
    • Lumbar spine and proximal femur
  • Peripheral QCT
    • Proximal and distal radius
  • Volumetric BMD of separate bone compartments
    • Trabecular bone
    • Cortical bone
    • Total bone
  • Bone geometry
    • Diameter, thickness, cross-sectional area and moment of inertia
  • Data suitable for Finite Element Analysis
