Synarc Co-Founder Publishes Study to Clarify Diagnosis of Osteoporosis using T-scores

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – August 3, 2007 – Synarc Inc., the world's leading provider of medical image analysis, biochemical marker, and clinical research center services to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, announced that Kenneth Faulkner, Ph.D., is a contributing author in an original article designed to clarify the use of bone density results for the diagnosis of osteoporosis.

Dr. Faulkner, Vice President and Co-Founder of Synarc, worked with his co-authors to design a study to help clinicians better utilize the T-score, the primary output from a bone density test.  The article shows that when managing an individual patient’s bone density, clinicians should not become overly focused on a fixed T-score threshold when defining categories of bone status.

"A T-score of -2.5 is defined by the World Health Organizations as osteoporosis," said Faulkner. "But what about those who have a T-score of -2.4 or -2.45? Are these values really different from -2.5? This study was able to show that differences in T-score in the range of plus or minus 0.2 are not significant."

According to the article, rigid adherence to T-score thresholds could negatively impact patient management by failing to identify those with T-scores close to the diagnostic cut point.  The study was led by Dr. Gary Kiebzak from St. Luke’s Belmont Center in Houston, TX and done in collaboration with researchers at several top osteoporosis centers in the United States.  The article appears in the July-August issue of the Journal of Clinical Densitometry.

Synarc was formed in 1998 and since then has contributed to the approval of more leading compounds, across a broad spectrum of therapeutic areas, than any other central imaging provider.
