Dr. Edith MC Lau

Dr Edith Lau is currently the Director for the Asia Pacific region of Center for Clinical and Basic Research (CCBR)-SYNARC. She is also the Director of the CCBR Centers in Hong Kong and Beijing.

Dr Lau is a board member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation. She is also founding president of the Asian Pacific Osteoporosis Foundation and the Hong Kong Osteoporosis Foundation.

Dr Lau has conducted research in the field of osteoporosis for 2 decades. The main focuses are the epidemiology and clinical aspects of osteoporosis in Asia. She documented the epidemic of osteoporosis in Asia in the late1980’s, and this has inspired many investigators in Asia to start research in this area. She was the principal investigator of the main studies of osteoporosis in Asia, such as the Asian Osteoporosis Study. She also initiated Mr Os (Hong Kong) which is the largest cohort study on osteoporosis in Asia to date. This study was funded by the National Institute of Health. She has published more than 200 articles in this field.

Dr Edith Lau graduated from the University of Hong Kong in the year 1979. She obtained her Doctorate of Medicine Degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1991. In 1982, she joined the Chinese University Medical School as a Lecturer in Community Medicine. She was inaugurated as a Professor in Community Medicine in 2001. In the same year, she set up the Hong Kong Jockey Club Center for Osteoporosis Care and Control. This center was the first of its kind in Asia. In 2004, Dr Lau founded the Hong Kong Orthopaedic and Osteoporosis Center for Treatment and Research.
